Kegerreis Free Throws Lift Bloomsburg Women Over Cheyney

BLOOMSBURG -The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team defeated the Wolves of Cheyney University 51-49 Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division matchup.
A pair of Colleen Kegerreis (Schuylkill Haven/Schuylkill Haven) free throws with five seconds remaining made the difference, as Bloomsburg improves their record to 5-11 overall, 1-1 in PSAC East play.
The Huskies got off to a hot start in the first half, as Kelly Joyce (Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) nailed a deep three followed by a jumper by Stephanie Jones (Philadelphia/Manor College) to take a 9-2 lead at the 15:51 mark of the first period. Cheyney would close the gap, as Angel Henderson responded with a three-pointer of her own to cut the Huskies lead to three, 14-11.
Cheyney took their first lead of the game with 1:56 left in the first half courtesy of a Henderson three, but a pair of Kegerreis free throws gave the Huskies a 24-23 lead going into the break.
The Huskies would start the second half on another surge when Lauren Healy (Glenmoore/Owen J. Roberts) hit a three pointer at the 18 minute mark to give the Huskies a 29-23 advantage. Bloomsburg would lead by as many as seven when Cheyney responded with a run of their own, tying the game at 35 with 10:23 left to go in the game.
The teams would trade baskets over the next five minutes, and Cheyney would take their second lead of the game, 44-42 with 4:44 remaining in the game of a pair of Danielle Jones free throws. Cheyney would maintain their lead until the two-minute mark, when Joyce buried a deep three to give the Huskies a one point advantage, 49-48. Cheyney's Angel Stephens hit the back end of a pair of free throws to tie the game at 49 with 33 seconds remaining.
With only nine seconds left, a Joyce layup attempt was blocked by Stephanie Orji, only to fall into the hands of Kegerreis, who was immediately fouled. Kegerreis knocked down both free throws, and Bloomsburg held on the remaining five seconds to preserve the victory.
Kelly Joyce led the way for Bloomsburg with 20 points, including 3-6 shooting from three-point range. Kegerreis finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
The Huskies return to action on Wednesday night when they travel to East Stroudsburg. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
